Industry analysts assessing the Malaysian franchise sector point to a projected growth trajectory that would see total sales value rise from RM14.65 billion in 2020 to RM22.66 billion by 2025, according to data presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. This represents a compound increase of approximately 54.8% over the five-year period, based on the figures cited in the Prime Minister’s address at the launch of the 29th Franchise International Malaysia Exhibition and Conference (FIM) 2022.

Registered Franchisers and Outlet Expansion

Specialists examining the structural growth of the industry note that 1,149 franchisers are currently registered under the Franchise Act 1998, providing a baseline for market analysis. The operational footprint of these franchisers expanded significantly in 2021, with the number of franchise outlets in the country increasing by 47% year-on-year to reach 13,779. This expansion correlates with the creation of approximately 49,000 jobs, a figure the Prime Minister stated would likely rise as the number of franchise companies continues to grow. Technical observers of the labor market would view this as a notable contribution to formal employment within the retail and service sectors.

Global Presence and Micro-Franchise Initiatives

From an international trade perspective, the Prime Minister highlighted that Malaysian franchise brands have achieved broader global recognition, with 68 brands currently operating across 74 nations. This metric provides a concrete measure of the sector’s export potential and brand equity abroad. Concurrently, policy analysts note the government’s targeted intervention through the Micro and Affordable Franchise Development Programme, designed to develop micro-franchises specifically for the B40 income group. This initiative represents a strategic effort to lower the capital barrier to franchise ownership for lower-income demographics, a factor that could influence future market inclusivity statistics.

FIM2022 Economic Impact and Visitor Projections

Examination of the current event data shows that FIM2022, themed “Rebuilding Growth, Spurring Excellence,” is expected to generate potential investments worth RM450 million. The exhibition, which commenced yesterday and concludes tomorrow, features 91 local and international exhibitors from nine countries and is projected to attract 14,000 visitors. These figures provide a snapshot of current market engagement and investor sentiment within the franchise ecosystem.

Looking ahead, market analysts will be watching for several key indicators: the actual sales value achieved by the end of 2025 relative to the RM22.66 billion projection, the rate of new franchise registrations under the Franchise Act 1998, and the measurable impact of the Micro and Affordable Franchise Development Programme on B40 participation rates. The performance of the 68 Malaysian brands in their 74 international markets will also serve as a barometer for the sector’s global competitiveness in the coming years.
