How Personal Protection Strategies Are Evolving From Campus Training to Executive Security

The Spectrum of Personal Security Needs

Personal security exists on a continuum that stretches from university campuses to corporate boardrooms. At one end, students access free training designed to build immediate awareness. At the other, technology chief executives retain private security details that cost millions annually. The gap between these endpoints reflects how safety strategies have scaled alongside rising risks.

How Universities Provide Accessible Safety Training

Institutions of higher learning have long served as the first point of contact for personal safety education. Marquette University Police Department, for example, offers free self-defense and personal security awareness classes to students and staff throughout the fall semester. The self-defense curriculum incorporates simple strategies for escaping potentially dangerous situations, while the awareness sessions review steps individuals can take to limit exposure to personal and environmental risks. Registration remains available online for remaining fall 2026 sessions, providing an accessible entry point for community members seeking foundational skills.

The Rising Costs of Executive Protection in the AI Era

For technology leaders, the calculus of personal protection has shifted dramatically. Anthropic invested $2.75 million in security for CEO Dario Amodei during 2025, a figure that exceeded four times his base salary and represented more than 15 percent of his total compensation package. The company extended similar measures to Amodei’s sister and cofounder, Daniela, allocating $1.29 million for her personal protection, home security, and transportation. Anthropic’s board determined in 2025 that enhanced protection was necessary, citing increased media attention and what it described as “bona fide business-related, heightened security concerns.” The measures included personal protection details, home surveillance, and private transportation with drivers. Digital threats have accompanied this physical security surge; according to security intelligence firm Liferaft, digital threats targeting AI executives and data centers surged sevenfold from late February to May 2026.

New Insurance Models for Personal Cyber Threats

Insurance products have evolved to address the intersection of physical and digital risk. CFC, a specialist insurance provider, has released an update to its Cyber Proactive Response policy, introducing new personal protections for senior executives. The enhanced coverage addresses personal crime, extortion, temporary relocation for executives and their families, and trauma counseling following cyber incidents. Scott Bailey, Head of Global Cyber Underwriting at CFC, noted that cyber attacks no longer stop at an organization’s network but increasingly target the people responsible for running the business. The policy also provides extended business interruption indemnity, now stretching to 18 months, reflecting real-world recovery timelines.

Practical Steps for Individual Risk Management

For individuals navigating rising safety risks, practical steps begin with awareness and extend to structural choices. University-offered self-defense classes provide immediate, low-cost training in escape strategies and situational awareness. At the high end, executive protection details incorporate home surveillance, private transportation, and round-the-clock monitoring, though these services carry significant cost. Cyber insurance policies now include personal protections for extortion and temporary relocation, offering a financial buffer against digital-age threats. The hierarchy of safety, as outlined by occupational safety frameworks, prioritizes elimination and substitution of hazards; when those are not feasible, personal protective equipment and trained response strategies serve as the final layer of defense.
