High School Esports Players Competing

McLean, October 8 — The story begins with a significant announcement in the world of high school esports, as USA TODAY Sports, in partnership with PlayVS, launched the USA TODAY Sports National High School Esports Championship on October 7, 2026. This round-robin tournament will feature eight top high school esports teams from across the country competing in EA Sports Madden NFL, Marvel Rivals, and Rocket League on the PlayVS platform.

The qualifying teams were selected based on game-winning percentages in those three games and the number of graduating seniors, as evaluated by PlayVS during the 2026 Spring esports season. Tournament play begins on Monday, October 12, 2026, with results from all three games contributing to overall team standings.

The championship aims to recognize elite high school athletes in esports, extending USA TODAY Sports’ tradition of recognizing elite high school athletes through the Super 25 and ALL-USA franchises. Alicia DelGallo, USA TODAY Network Sports Editorial Director, stated the championship extends USA TODAY Sports’ tradition of recognizing elite high school athletes through the Super 25 and ALL-USA franchises to esports.

Partnership and Recognition

The partnership between USA TODAY Sports and PlayVS is a significant one, with PlayVS being North America’s leading scholastic and collegiate gaming platform. Jonathan Boswell, CEO of PlayVS, said the competition will bring national recognition to outstanding esports programs and student-athletes. The championship builds on the USA TODAY SUPER 25 Esports Rankings, launched in 2024 by USA TODAY Sports and PlayVS, and will culminate in the crowning of the first-ever USA TODAY Sports National High School Esports Champion.

The top two teams will advance to the National Championship on Friday, December 11, 2026, and the winning team will continue to compete in the spring as part of the inaugural USA TODAY Sports Challenger Series against other top high school and collegiate teams. An ALL-USA Esports Team will be selected from the eight participating teams and announced alongside the champion on the USA TODAY High School Sports National Hub, supported by multimedia coverage across video and editorial platforms.

Looking Ahead

As the tournament approaches, fans and supporters can expect to see intense competition and exciting matchups. USA TODAY Sports reaches approximately 38 million unique monthly visitors based on June 2026 Comscore Media Metrix data. For those involved, the stakes are high, but the potential rewards are significant.

As the story unfolds, one thing is certain: the USA TODAY Sports National High School Esports Championship will be an event to watch, with the top teams competing for the coveted title and the chance to take their esports careers to the next level.
